Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, founded on October 3, 1887, as the State Normal College for Colored Students, began classes with fifteen students and two instructors. FAMU’s destiny would be to become an institution of higher learning and increasing academic excellence. Today, Florida A&M University is one of eleven institutions in Florida's State University System, and excellence remains its goal.
FAMU offers 62 bachelor's degrees in 94 majors, 37 master's degrees with 50 majors and one specialist degree program. The university has 13 schools and colleges and one institute and offers three professional degrees: the JD, PharmD, and the doctor of physical therapy.
For more than 100 years, Florida A&M University has served the citizens of the State of Florida and the nation through its provision of preeminent educational programs which were the building blocks of a legacy of academic excellence with caring.
