Located in Sarasota, New College began in 1960 as a small liberal arts college, graduating their first class in 1967. Separating from the University of South Florida to become an independent honors college in 2001, New College was the eleventh university in the State University System of Florida. As a designated "honors college for the liberal arts," New College is the only public college or university in the Florida whose sole mission is to provide an undergraduate education of the highest caliber.
With a student-to-faculty ratio of 10:1 and enrollment under 800 students, New College continues its mission. New College was recently ranked as the #3 public college or university by Forbes and by the Wall Street Journal as the #2 for sending graduates to top law, medical and business schools. In fact, New College is among the top 10 liberal arts colleges in terms of per capita Fulbright production, producing more than 36 Fulbright Scholars since 1995. This is higher than Harvard, Stanford and Yale.
